BSUN 2018 Congress „Sustainable Development Goals in the Black Sea Region: from Science to Implementation” (2018-06-18 ⇒ 2018-06-19)

BSUN 2018 Congress

„UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in the Black Sea Region: from Science to Implementation”

The theme was selected based on the assessment of the emerging themes and trends in higher education systems globally, that interest equally the Rectors of BSUN, stakeholders and interested parties, decision-makers and key actors in higher education.

As it is widely known, in 2015 the UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this document, the heads of UN member states have committed their countries that: “Until [..] 2030, to end poverty and hunger everywhere; to combat inequalities within and among countries; to build peaceful, just and inclusive societies; to protect human rights and promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls; and to ensure the lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources. [..] also to create conditions for sustainable, inclusive and sustained economic growth, shared prosperity and decent work for all, taking into account different levels of national development and capacities.

According to the document, “By 2030, [..] the signatory states have to [..] ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.”

In a world facing dynamic, complex and fundamental changes, such a commitment is a Grand Challenge for all countries including, the countries of our Region.

Universities are also part of such an ever changing environment, which requires them to change their methods and shift from their core knowledge to also include greater emphasis on skill and attitude development. The current challenges in all fields of education require to include scientific research approaches in all taught programmes. With the growing availability of technology-enhanced learning there is a clear role for them with regards to the delivery of knowledge, allowing flexible modes of study and an efficient learning experience for many.

At the same time, universities bring together expertise from different disciplines in research and education and provide a unique environment for exploring and developing new ideas. They are therefore ideally placed to enable the development of robust and effective solutions to address the challenges of our region. The BSUN Congress is a platform for dialogue and exchange of ideas that attracts various contributors from different disciplines. The BSUN 2018 Congress is an opportunity to rethink the role of universities in light of regional and global societal transformations.

MEETING OF THE SECRETARIES GENERAL OF THE PARLIAMENTS OF THE BSEC MEMBER STATES (2018-03-06)

Speech of Prof. Eden Mamut, BSUN Secretary General

Distinguished Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General,
Your Excellency Ambassador Michael Christides, BSEC PERMIS Secretary General
Excellences, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Allow me to express my most gratitude for the invitation to join this meeting which has been organized on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the PABSEC.  This year is an important jubilee for PABSEC which is marking an important achievement in a very difficult period, with complex and complicated challenges, to keep the representatives of the 12 Parliaments of the region still together. They may have different opinions, different interests but sitting together and listening each other there is still a chance for solutions.  This achievement was possible also due to the contribution of the specialized units in organizing, facilitating and coordinating the activities of such a regional Assembly. In any kind of organization, the secretariat is by definition the “hidden part of the iceberg” that is planning, allocating the required resources, structuring the logistics, coordinating and dynamically adjusting the needs for properly running of the activities. And this is not only common sense, it has been demonstrated scientifically by the Constructal Theory that was proposed by a Romanian origin scientist, prof. Adrian Bejan from the Duke University in the USA. The constructal law is the law of physics that accounts for the phenomenon of evolution (configuration, forms of organization, design shapes) throughout nature, inanimate flow systems and animate systems together. According to the Constructal Law, “For a finite-size system to persist in time (to live), it must evolve in such a way that it provides easier access to the imposed currents (processes) that flow through it.” (Adrian Bejan, 1996).

Joint Exploratory Workshop of the EIT RawMaterials and Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Joint Undertaking - FCH2JU (2017-02-16 ⇒ 2017-02-17)

Joint Exploratory Workshop of the EIT RawMaterials and Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Joint Undertaking - FCH2JU on:

“Critical Raw Materials in Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Value Chains

The purpose of the event is to initiate a model of cooperation between two large RTDI groupings which are part of the main pillars of the Innovation Union Strategy of the EU, in order to generate synergies and multiplication factors for turning European creative approaches and ideas into products and services.

The event is organized in the context of the commitments of EU member states to support the implementation of the COP 21 Agreement, where hydrogen energy technologies could play a fundamental role in mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, in the process of a broad implementation of fuels cells and hydrogen technologies in fast emerging sectors, it is important to consider the whole value chains of these technologies in order to assess their overall ecological impact, and to design strategies to improve these products and their value chains economically as well as ecologically.

The increasing use of fuel cells in cars, for example, is expected to lead to a quickly growing demand for Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) because fuel cells vehicles require a multiple of the PGM amounts needed for conventional cars. PGM production is not only itself related to some negative environmental impacts (e.g. through the use of fossil-fuel energy for mining and metallurgical plants), but also raises questions of long-term availability due to the limitation of reserves and Europe’s economical dependence on the countries of the materials’ origin. In order to avoid future barriers for development and dissemination of FCH technologies, their materials demand and the related issues should be considered early enough in order to develop strategies to react on the changing markets and the new challenges – as well as the opportunities – they are posing.

The participants are expected to take part in open debates by expressing their opinions, sharing their experience, and presenting proposals for further development of FCH technologies considering the sustainability of the future value chains.
